The Victoria Theatre Birthday Celebration
First opened in 1912, Devonports' Victoria Theatre is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, movie theatres in the Southern Hemisphere. The building has been threatened with demolition many times over the last few decades (grrrrrrr - developers wanting to build expensive apartments!!!!) but a dedicated group of volunteers have managed to preserve the structure and have succeeded in restoring the venue to its former glory. They have ongoing issues with equipment upgrades, renovations etc and on 27 October 2012 held a fundraiser combined with a birthday celebration concert to help further their aims.
Wires & Wood were honoured to be asked to be a part of this celebration and it had special meaning for us. The first public performance we did as a band, back in 2003, was at a fundraiser for this same theatre so it was very cool to be asked back to help.
These photos are not the best images we've ever had, but they do capture something of the flavour of the event. The young ladies in the 'Green Room' shots were scheduled to perform after us and treated us to a beautiful rendition of Chattanooga Choo Cho while we were waiting to go on. They also joined in on Over Rainbow while Dave and Bryan were having a warmup - what a treat!!.
